The challenge

For businesses operating in the built environment, sustainability is a key issue. Those leading this function are constantly under pressure to lower carbon emissions, achieve net zero and drive change in all climate related areas. Our client had recently appointed a Head of Sustainability and a new senior leadership team to champion this area of the business, working across carbon, environmental, social value, innovation and technology, procurement and communications.

Our challenge was to help this team manage the pressures they faced individually and as a group and help them understand and support each other to achieve maximum success.

The Cellence Plus approach

In today's complex world, we know that trust, vulnerability, and empathy are essential for team success. Using the Hogan Insights personality psychometrics, we assessed every team member to help them understand their strengths and weaknesses. We focused on:

Team Identity: We looked at the team personality as a whole and how others interact with them. This helped the team understand each other's goals, skills and needs.

Collective Strengths: We identified what the team was good at and where they excelled. This was about performance, resilience and energy - making the most of each and every person and perspective.

Navigating Challenge: We analysed how the team operated in tough situations to identify and navigate misunderstandings and conflicts. This aimed to improve and promote better self-management.

Success and outlook

This multi-faceted and ambitious senior leadership team is now set up with deep knowledge of one another, enabling them to thrive and handle even their toughest challenges. In short, they’re ready for anything. Specifically we improved trust & empathy, performance and diversity of thought.  Team members were able to be open and vulnerable, which has strengthened connections between them. Insights have helped managers guide and facilitate individuals and have helped the team spot potential threats that could affect their results overall. And team dynamics are fully understood, including pairing personalities strategically to make better decisions.

We are delighted that this process has been so productive, and has given the Senior Leadership Team a better understanding of each other, improved their bonds, boosted their performance, and given them a shared way to collaborate effectively in a challenging world.
